Too many.

The situation has improved in the past few years, as the ndustry creates and supports adoption groups to find homes for greyhounds after their racing careers end. However, not all retired greyhounds are lucky enough to be adopted, and many of the unlucky ones end up being euthanized.

Individuals who wish to help can contact their local greyhound track, as volunteers are welcome. Those able to adopt a greyhound will find that they make excellent pets. Greyhounds are intelligent, loyal, affectionate, docile dogs. They are not, as a rule, high-strung, as many may think. Greyhounds are excellent around children. Also, their racing training makes them easy to handle; they are obedient and responsive when around others and when walking on a leash.

What kind of drugs do greyhound race trainers put their greyhounds on while racing?

It is illegal to give racing greyhound drugs of any description. To qualify that statement - all racing greyhounds must be presented to race, free of any prohibited substance. Random testing is done on racing greyhounds (urine analysis) and if prohibited substances are found the owner, trainer or person in charge of the greyhound is guilty of an offence and can be fined, disqualified or combintation of both.

What age do you stop racing your greyhound?

around 5 years but if they still enjoy it carry on!!! In Australia the majority of "champion" greyhounds will finish their racing careers well before the age of 4 years. Champion female greyhounds will probably go on to have puppies and champion males may go to stud. "Average" greyhounds (as long as they are injury free and as it says above, if they're still enjoying it) can carry on racing for as long as they want - there are a couple of greyhounds currently still racing at nearly 6 years of age! You shouldn't really race them at all as its a cruel sport and they do not enjoy it themselves. I could say the same with horse racing.
