Synchronized swimming is for women only in the Olympics because there have never been more than a few strong male synchronized swimmers.
It's actually not just for women, there have been some men practicing/competing in rhythmic gymnastics in a separate category from women, but it isn't very popular yet.

There were actually a few events introduced as full medal sports in the 1984 Summer Olympics. These included: * the marathon for women (Joan Benoit of the USA takes its first gold) * synchronized swimming (Duet won by the USA) * rhythmic gymnastics (Lori Fung of Canada wins first gold) * wind surfing (various)
