According to Wikipedia (refer to the link, below), in the "Open Era" (i.e., since 1968*), the players with the most singles titles as of June 8, 2009 are as follows: among the men, Jimmy Connors with 108; among the women, Martina Navratilova with 167.

* (titles prior to 1968 aren't included because many players were not given a fair chance to compete at any given tournament for a number of reasons; such tournaments are now referred to as "closed" or "invitational". Thus, a player like Rod Laver who had 198 singles wins during his career (40 in the "Open Era"), would not be counted; also, many singles titles were not counted or were otherwise lost to history)
