Ralph Waldo Emerson was the first to refer to the first shot that occurred during the battle of Lexington. He used it in the opening stanza of the "Concord Hymn" in 1837.This shot was symbolic in that it opened the possibility that a war between the colonies and the British could take place. It was suddenly possible.

"Around the world" probably was used since the war changed the fabric of the world in many ways including the notion that a government run for and by the people was better and more representative than authoritative rule. It also showed that people working together had the power to make great change. In fact it was at least partly responsible for encouraging the French Revolution.
