Jack Quinn

He won 247 games. He pitched 28 shutouts in his career. This pitcher also had 57 saves in his career. Just compare something with the sure HOF pitcher, Roger Clemens, who is about to turn age 45 on Saturday, August 4, 2007:

Two of this players shut-outs came after the age of forty-five! Thirty-three of the saves came after the age of forty-five! What also is amazing is that he led his league (NL) in saves twice ... both coming after the age of forty-five. In fact ... it happened when he was both forty-eight and forty-nine years in age! The season in which he turned forty-five he had an 18-7 record for the Athletics, (AL) with 4 shut-outs and a 2.90 ERA! Two years after that season, while still with the Athletics, this player hit a home run -- at the age of forty-seven ... while hitting .265! At the age of forty-nine, while in the NL ... he hit a double! He only hit .200 in that season though. ;)

How about some more of the plus forty-five years in age factor:

This pitcher won five of his games against future Hall of Fame Pitchers! He beat Herb Pennock twice. He also beat Red Ruffing, Dizzy Dean and Carl Hubbell -- once each! This pitcher beat Dizzy Dean ... did so at the age of forty-nine! He beat Carl Hubbell at the age of forty-nine! The final win for this pitcher came when he beat Paul Derringer ... at the age of 49 years, 2 months, and 8 days! Paul Derringer would be a 223 game winner when his career was over.

The oldest pitcher to win a major league game was Jack Quinn and he belongs in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

That was Jack Quinn for the Philadelphia Athletics in Game 4 of the 1929 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. Quinn was born July 1, 1883 and Game 4 was played October 12, 1929 which made him 46 years, 3 months, 11 days old. Ironically, this game was the game where the largest comeback in World Series history occurred. Quinn gave up 7 hits and 6 runs in 5+ innings. Going into the bottom of the 7th inning, the Cubs led the A's 8-0. The A's scored 10 runs in the bottom of the 7th and wound up winning, 10-8.
