No one in particular led the February 1917 Russian Revolution. That revolution happened somewhat spontaneously with a demonstration by a group of women protesting food shortages. It spread to workers and soldiers in St. Petersburg and in other cities until it was out of control. The Tsar's ministers convinced the Tsar that he no longer had any power to quell the riots and that he had to abdicate, which he did.

Vladimir I. Lenin and his Bolsheviks led the October Russian Revolution.

Vladimir Lenin and his Bolshevik Party were the primary revolutionaries, but other factions joined the fight against the absolutism of the tsar (king). After the Red Army defeated the royalist White Army, Lenin cleverly outmaneuvered his erstwhile allies. The Bolshevik party took total control of the government, and introduced a new form of absolutism.

The Bolsheviks, who came to be known as the Communists, renamed the country from The Russian Empire to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). (Since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, the remaining "republics" of the country called themselves the Russian Federation.)

The final revolution began in 1917, but was not the first challenge to the government of the Russian Empire. The most notable uprisings were in 1905 and earlier in 1917, but they were not revolutions as much as spontaneous reactions to specific incidents that fired growing unrest.

The "Glorious Revolution" opened October 25, according to the long-outdated Julian calendar that still was used in the Russian Empire. The newer Augustinian calendar - already used for over 100 years by the rest of Europe - was instituted by the Communist government. This added 13 days to each previous date in the country's history, including the October Revolution.

Ironically, the Communists moved the celebration date of their glorious October Revolution from October 25 to November 7, when it was celebrated by the country and its people.

No one led the February Revolution in Russia in 1917. It was a spontaneous and unorganized general protest demonstration city wide by workers, peasants and soldiers. It soon spread to other towns and cities. The soldiers in the city garrison not only refused to stop the demonstrations, many actually joined them in the streets. Tsar Nicholas II realized the only way to stop the rioting was to abdicate the throne, so he did.
