Why did Muhammed Ali not fight in the Vietnam war but in the boxing ring?

Sounds good, but one cannot really compare fighting to the death in the Vietnam War to the non-fatal sport (unless its an accident) of boxing; however...Muhammed Ali (he didn't like Cassius Clay because he said that was the name given to him by the White Man) didn't want to fight in Vietnam because (which meant entering the US Military), as he stated, "...no VC ever called him (me) a "N----." To add on to that another reason is because of his Muslim religion

∙ 12y agoHe said that he "ain't got no problem with the Viet Cong" and that "no Viet Cong ever called [him] a n*gger." He was drafted to fight, but refused to go over.
A governor was appalled by this obvious disinterest and anti-war opinion of the war, and had him tossed in jail on a five year sentence, but Ali was later acquitted on an appeal.
So basically he didn't think we should be involved because it was more a war within Vietnam that America wasn't involved in in the first place. That's not to say he was a "Dove," as he certainly wasn't a pacifist (being a pro fighter and all) but he didn't agree with US involvement.
