Four players share the NFL record for longest field goal (63 yards): Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints in 1970; Jason Elam of the Denver Broncos in 1998; Sebastian Janikowski of the Oakland Raiders in 2011; and David Akers of the San Francisco 49ers in 2012.

Both Elam and Janikowski tied the record in Denver. Elam's kick was in Mile High Stadium; Janikowski's was in Sports Authority Field at Mile High (formerly Invesco Field). Dempsey's field goal against the Detroit Lions at Tulane Stadium was a game winner. Akers' kick was against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

Elam, Janikowski and Akers kicked their field goals at the end of the first half. Dempsey's kick gave the Saints a 19-17 victory over the Lions with two seconds left in the game.

Sebastian Janikowski of the Oakland Raiders on September 28, 2008 attempted a 76-yarder just before halftime against the San Diego Chargers.

On December 8, 2013, Matt Prater kicked a 64-yard field goal for the Denver Broncos against the Tennessee Titans. This broke Tom Dempsey's 43-year-old shared record of 63 yards, set with the New Orleans Saints on November 8, 1970.

In addition to successful 63-yard kicks by Tom Dempsey, Jason Elam, Sebastian Janikowski, and David Akers, Jeff Reed of the Steelers attempted a 65-yard FG at the end of the first half of their game against the Denver Broncos on October 21, 2007. Two kickers in NCAA football have attempted kicks of 72 yards. Both were unsuccessful. The longest successful college kick was 69 yards by Ove Johansson in 1976.
