** It should be noted that the NCAA does not recognize a National Championship in football as there is no tournament format to declare a true national champion in a fair unbiased way.

** It should also be noted that the list below are "Division-1" and before there were multiple divisions

Recognized National Championships1.Ivy League-69 (Princeton 28, Yale 26, Harvard 7, Penn 7, Dartmouth 1)

2-BIG10- 40 (Michigan-11, Minnesota-6, Ohio State-7, Illinois-4 ,Michigan State-4, Penn State-4, Iowa-1

3 - SEC-30 (Alabama-12, Tennessee-4, LSU-4, Florida-3, Ga- 2, Arkansas-1, Auburn-2, Ole Miss-2 )

4- BIG12- 19 (Oklahoma-7, Nebraska-5, Texas-4, Texas A&M-2, Colorado-1)

5- PAC10- 15 (Southern Cal-8, Cal-4, Stanford-1, Washington-1, UCLA-1)

6- ACC- 14 (Miami-5, Ga.Tech-4, Maryland-1, Fla St.-2, Clemson-1, Boston College-1)

7- BIG EAST- 10 (Pittsburgh-9, Syracuse-1)

Bowl Championship Series SEC (6 - Tennessee, 1998; LSU, 2003, 2007; Florida, 2006, 2008; Alabama 2009)

Prior to the 1998 season, the Divsion I-A national championship was awarded, by the AP and various other polling organizations. The only thing any team "won" was a popularity contest. The big bowl games rarely pitted the best teams against each other, and in any event, until the 1970s, were played after the national championship was awarded. It was only with the establishment of the BCS that teams actually had to win the national championship, on the field. Since that time, SEC teams have won 6 national championships. No other conference has won more than 2 (Big 12, and ACC, if you include Miami's national championship in the ACC total, even though they were not part of the ACC at that time). The Big 10 and Pac 10 have one each (Ohio State and USC). The Big East has one, but only if you count Miami's national championship, since Miami was in the Big East at the time they won it. So:

If you go with conference affiliation at the time of the championship:

SEC (6)

Big 12 (2)

ACC (1)

Big 10 (1)

Big East (1)

Pac 10 (1)

All other Division I-A Conferences (0)

If you go with current conference affiliation:

SEC (6)

ACC (2)

Big 12 (2)

Big 10 (1)

Pac 10 (1)

Big East (0)

All other Division I-A Conferences (0)

Important note -- (as supervisor I do not want to delete the above because it is a common misinformed opinion) It is important that you don't believe it all as truth. The BCS is nothing more then the way the AP and the Coaches Poll determined the National Championship before 1998. The BCS is just a more complex system of calculating with computers and personal opinion how teams rank. The BCS actually takes into consideration the Harris Poll, Coaches Poll, and 4 computer rankings. There is nothing "played out on the field" about it. Proof needs to go no further then:

Boise State Broncos:

9-1 in Bowl Games since 1999

2006 - 13-0 (win over Oklahoma in 2007 Fiesta Bowl)

2007 - 10-3 (every loss was to top 25 team)

2008 - 12-1 (loss Poinsettia Bowl to #11 TCU)

2009 - 14-0 (won over TCU in 2010 Fiesta Bowl

*** yet no appearances in the BCS National Championship simply due to the fact they do not play in a "BCS conference"

--- no team outside the top 15 preseason poll to start the season has ever competed in the BCS National Championship. All the BCS does is now rather then having 2 possibly controversial Champions (Coaches Poll and AP poll champions), College Football has now 1 "controversial" champion

As a contributor, I won't delete the above because 1) I believe in free speech, even when it's ridiculous; and 2) I enjoying allowing those who disagree with me to make fools of themselves.

I admit that the BCS system is not perfect. In fact, nothing short of an 8-team (preferably 16-team) playoff will ever crown a "true" national champion. But the BCS is, nevertheless, a far cry better than the previous system. It is better because, The national championship is WON. On the field. In a game. Between two teams that SOMEONE thinks are the best two teams in the country. Yes, quite often, that someone is WRONG about those two teams being the best. But there's still a game between someone's idea of the best two teams in the country. That rarely happened prior to the BCS.

As for Boise State, that is truly laughable.Let me break down those bowl victories for you:

2006 - 13-0 (win over Oklahoma in 2007 Fiesta Bowl)

And Oklahoma is what? 0-6 in BCS bowl games? Look, Oklahoma, at its best, is the second or third best team in a conference that is a DISTANT second best. But, on top of that, Oklahoma, of late, can't seem to find a reason to get up for a big bowl game. Based on their performance in recent history, I suspect St. Mary's School for the Blind could beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. For the record, though no one has been bad enough to lose to Oklahoma in a BCS game in the past ten years or so, Boise State came closer to losing than any of Oklahoma's other BCS opponents, winning by 1 point on a trick play in overtime.

2007 - 10-3 (every loss was to top 25 team)

Exactly. They lost to three top-25 teams. This proves they can't hang with top-25 teams. They don't need to be humiliated by Florida in a national championship game to prove this - it has already been proven.

2008 - 12-1 (loss Poinsettia Bowl to #11 TCU)

Again, Boise State can't beat a top-ranked team (though in this case, TCU was way overranked, due to an artificially-inflated win total against pathetic teams. Kinda like Boise State.)

2009 - 14-0 (won over TCU in 2010 Fiesta Bowl)

Doesn't mention either team's rank, but I think they were both top ten, or close. It doesn't matter though, because both teams were way overranked (again due to artificially-inflated win totals against pathetic teams). Neither of them could have beaten any other BCS bowl team. The BCS folks put these two teams together so ONE of them could say they had won a BCS bowl game.

I sincerely hope we get a playoff one day soon just so we can put to rest this ridiculous notion that Boise State can play with the big boys. Barring that, I have a question for you. If your Boise State Broncos go 13-0 next year, and the BCS finally lets them into the BCS national championship game, and they get their butts whipped 63-7 by the winner of the REAL national championship game (played in Atlanta in Early December), will you guys finally give up the notion that you can play with the big boys?

Additionally, I believe that the Boise State Record in BCS bowls since 1999 is 6-4

Losses:

2004 Autozone Liberty Bowl: Lost to Luisville 44 to 40

2005 MPC Computers Bowl: Loss to Boston College 27 to 21

2007 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl: Loss to East Carolina 41 to 38

2008 San Diego Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl: Loss to TCU 17 to 16

11/30/2010: After reading what both the contributor and the supervisor wrote. Just to help out the Boise State Fan's Case: NEVADA...oh wait, I guess that didn't help. This probably doesn't either. Auburn #1, Arkansas #7, LSU #10. Please, give it a rest.

School with most National Championships1-Princeton 282-Yale 263-Alabama 134-Michigan 115-Notre Dame 11Many years , most recently03 there are Mutable national champs named. In these years I would just chose the higher ranked team in the AP. I found these national champs on NCAA.com which gives much better info on this question than any other website. If you do not agree with these findings then look for yourself on NCAA.com

USC falls off of the list because they have had National Championships taken away from them because of violations at there school, and it is not widely know that the Ivy League schools dominated College Football from 1869 all the way to the 1930's.

NCAA FOOTBALL TEAM WITH MOST CHAMPIONSHIP WINSA variety of opinions exist as to which NCAA Football team can lay claim to the most National Titles.

That would be Notre Dame.

Alabama.

Princeton 17 times....

OKLAHOMA has 16 recognized by NCAA, but only credits itself with the 7 consensus titles.

ALABAMA 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Yale has 18 titles since 1869. Princeton has 15, Notre Dame 11, Alabama 10.source: cfbdatawarehouse.com

Alabama has 12 official national championships and can easily claim 14, because there were a couple of years where we were undefeated but not champions.

The NCAA started recognizing championships in 1936. They did not name the champion, they just recognized who was named champion. If you count before 1936 to get the 11 and 12 that Alabama and Notre Dame have then you would have to count the 17 by Princeton and the others by yale and so forth.

Alabama with six.

The University of Alabama officially credits itself with 12 national championships, as does Notre Dame

University of Alabama, 12 National Championships:1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992

Until NCAA starts holding a Championship Game with a legitimate playoff leading up to it, there will never, never, never, be a true champion. So shut up and quit your freaking bickering. Wow this answer is full of homers.

Ohio State has the most recognizable national titles. All the other schools are debating on how many they won unofficially, Ohio State has 7 legitimate national titles. SO HAS OKLAHOMA! In the books though, Notre Dame is at the top with national titles.

Alabama has 12 national championships.(period) Notre Dame and Michigan are tied for second place with 11 championships apiece.

Alabama has 12 officially recognized national championships by the NCAA additionally there are like 4 or 5 more that are unofficial according to the NCAA. I believe Princeton has something like 24 but like 19 of those came in the 1800's when there were only 3 or 4 teams. IF you look at their record from the first championships they won with a record of 1-0 or 2-0 and crap like that. No way does that count.

The answer is Alabama with 12 "recognized" titles that is claims. 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992. If you look at the Official NCAA record book it also lists championships for the Tide in 1945, 1962, 1966, 1975 & 1977 bringing the total to 17. Sorry but Notre Dame or any Big Ten school can't claim that many. The Ivy league schools can't either without claiming seasons they only played 1 or 2 games. ROLL TIDE ROLL

This may actually be a question with no correct answer. Since different polls have conducted things so differently over the years. Although the SEC touts itself as the best Conference they also ask the least of their athletes academically which is why they are frequently slighted as being the official National Champions.

The five schools who claim to have the most championships are: Princeton, Yale, Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama,

The records I have found in different polls are as follows: 1869-1900 Yale had the most titles with 15 Princeton had 11 Michigan-0 ND-0 Bama-0

Then in 1901 the first bowl game was played between Michigan and Stanford 1901-1906: Yale-1 Princeton-2 Michigan-4 Alabama-0 ND-0

1906 saw the formation of the IAAUS the first organized college rules organization 1907-1910 Yale-2 all the other schools had none!

1910 is the formation of the NCAA. Primarily it was a sports round table for the different colleges who were members: 1911-1921

Princeton-1 Yale-1 ND-1 Michigan-1 Bama-0

1922 is when the modern version of the NCAA was formed. 1922-1935 Princeton-1 Yale-1 ND-3 Michigan-2 Bama-3

1936 sees the formation of the AP poll.

1936-1949 ND-4 Michigan-1 None of the other schools have a national championship in this time.

1950 sees the formation of the Consensus Poll National Champions. 1950-1972 ND-2 Bama-3 None of the other schools have a national championship in this time.

1973 is when the NCAA forms divisions ND-3 Mich-1 Bama-4 None of the other schools have a national championship in this time. When?

All of these schools claim to have more championships than are listed here, but just because I tell people and myself that I am the best does not make it true. These are figures based on actual polls and so depending on when you acknowledge the "official" start of a National Championship each school can accurately claim they have the most National Champion Titles! I agree with the statement that has never been a National Champion and never will be until there is a play-off system. Then maybe the SEC will get all the titles they have been crying that they deserve! But when will they require the athletes to know how to read more than the playbook. All of these schools except for Bama hold their athletes to strict academic requirements and unlike the schools in the SEC none of these schools create fake majors so their athletes can meet the NCAA eligibility requirements.

I would say Note Dame has won National Championship Only Offically with BCS and AP polls. Actually Norte Dame seriously had won 7 total title. Only in Football.

Even thought I hate 'Bama, they have definitely earned their way playing in the #1 conference in the country. So if you win to the championship in the SEC, you really are the best team in the nation.

NCAA-Recognized Championships (since 1869) 1. Princeton 28 2. Yale 27 3. Notre Dame 20 4. Alabama 17 5. OKLAHOMA 15 5. Michigan 15 5. Southern Cal 15 8. Ohio State 14 9. Nebraska 9 10. Harvard 11 10. Pittsburgh 11 NCAA-Recognized Championships (since 1936)* 1. OKLAHOMA 16 2. Notre Dame 14 3. Alabama 13 3. Ohio State 13 5. Nebraska 11 6. Southern Cal 10 7. Miami 8 8. Florida State 7 8. Tennessee 7 8. Texas 7

The AP introduced its poll in 1936. AP, Coaches' & BCS 1. Notre Dame 8 2. OKLAHOMA 7 2. Alabama 7 4. Southern Cal 6 5. Miami 5 5. Nebraska 5 5. Ohio State 5 8. Minnesota 4 9. Michigan 3 9. Texas 3

NCAA lists 10 each for Alabama & Notre Dame

By NCAA standards Alabama has 12 National Championships, no more no less, well for now anyways. ROLL TIDE!!!!

No, Alabama does not have 12 National Championships by NCAA standards. It only takes just a little research to figure this one out. The Tide can rightfully claim 7 National Titles. Example: In 1941, Minnesota won the AP National Championship, and Alabama was ranked 20th in the final poll. Furthermore, Mississippi State won the SEC title that year. Yet Alabama claims a N.C. for '41 because a Football Thesaurus listed them as #1 years later.

Snice 1936 Notre Dame has won more than any other team; 8 AP national championships Oklahoma is second. Notre Dame has won 11 consensus and 7 other totaling 18. If Alabama can claim 12 of which only 6 are recognized by the NCAA Notre Dame can claim 18. As for Yale: any pre-forward pass national championships are not valid.

Well Yale had the most in all with 19. Although, there last title was in 1927. Princeton Has 17 right behind them.

Answer

The Big Ten, im almost positive.

The Pac 10/Pacific Coast Conference has won 17 since 1936, including 1936. The Big 1Ten1 has won 16.

Welll, I think its the SEC- Alabama has 9 - UT has 2 - LSU has 3 - Florida 3 - ole miss 1 - Arkansas 1 - AU 1

AnswerNote that the question asks which conference has won the most championships. Prior to the 1998 season, national championships were not won, on the field, in a game, but were awarded by one of several polling organizations. The only thing that any "national champion" prior to 1998 won was a popularity contest. Since the inception of the BCS with the 1998 season, the two highest ranked teams in the country had to face each other, on the field, in a "national championship game", with the winner being recognized as the "national champion". Since that time, SEC teams have won six (6) national championships (Tennessee, the first one, in 1998; LSU in 2003 and 2007; Florida in 2006 and 2008; and Alabama in 2009). No other conference has won more than 2

There was no such thing as an official "national championship game" until the BCS system began in the 1998 season. Since that time, teams from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) have won four(4) national championship games (Tennessee 1998; LSU 2003; Florida 2006; LSU 2007). The Big 12 has won 2 national championship games. The other four BCS conferences (Big East, Big 10, ACC, and Pac 10) have won 1 each. However, the team that got the one Big East win is now in the ACC.

According to NationalChamps.net All time data base the answer would be the Big 10 with 7 teams, and second the SEC with 6.

Big 10: Illinois 4 titles, Iowa 1 title, Michigan 10 titles, Michigan State 2 titles, Ohio State 5 titles, Penn State 4, and Minnesota with 6 titles for a total of 42 National Championship's in football.

SEC: Alabama 12 titles, Auburn 2 titles, Florida 4 titles, Georgia 1 title, LSU 4, and Tennessee 2 for a total of 25 National Chairmanship's.

Sorry SEC fans our current dominance is a recent event.

By the way SEC does hold the record for the most National Championships in a row at 5. Michigan won the national title 4 years in a row. 1901-1904
