The record is held by the 2000 Baltimore Ravens who allowed 165 points. The 1986 Chicago Bears are second at 187 points allowed.

However, the 1976 Pittsburgh Steelers only gave up 138 points in 14 games (regular season) for an average of 9.85 points per game versus the Ravens 10.31 points per game in 2000. They also had 5 shutouts! Best single season defense ever!! (Almost see below the scores)

W 21-0

Please note that the Ravens let up 2 TDs on offense (13 points worth), so the Defense only allowed 152 points or 9.5 PPG. (All the Steelers points were allowed by their D)

Please note also that this is a team sport and sometimes players are asked to play both ways (offense and defense). At the time of the turnovers above, your great Ravens offense was now the ravens team defense, which still makes the fact that they allowed 10.31 points per game. Go Steelers

Please note that the question is clearly for 16 games, but since you want to compare 14 games PPG avg, the 1976 Steelers still would not have the best Defense. The 1977 Falcons allowed 129 points, 7 of which came on a kickoff return in a game against the Bears, for an average of 9.2 PPG. The Most shutouts in a season, win or tie, were the 1926 Pottsville Maroons with 11. The best PPG avg was the 1920 Akron Pros (0.6PPG). They gave up 7 points the whole season. I was just putting an asterisk on the Steelers "record." I know of the team aspect probably much more than you. I'm certainly not a Ravens fan especially with Ray Lewis murdering people. again, I was just pointing out an interesting fact because I can actually perform statistical research instead of going to NFL.com. As the last poster points out, anyway you slice it the Steelers still don't have the record.

The 2010 patriots finished a sixteen game season with 6 turnovers setting an NFL record low. Leading the way was Tom Brady with over 300 passing attempts without an interception. Also a league record.newtest3

This answer is off a bit. They do indeed now hold the record, but it's 10, not 6. Tom Brady threw 4 Interceptions, not 0. I'm not sure where the above statistics came from.
