In the early years of MLB there were many players that hit over .400, however since those teams didn't play long seasons they are rarely recognized. In the first season of MLB (1871, a league called the American Association) there were three players to bat over .400. The highest was Levi Meyerle of the Philadelphia Athletics who hit .492. He played 26 games (the Athletics played 28 total) and had 64 hits in 130 at bats. The other two players were Cal McVey who hit .431 (66 hits in 153 at bats) and Ross Barnes who hit .401 (63 hits in 157 at bats). The first National League player to hit .400 was Ross Barnes of the Chicago White Stockings (now Cubs and the same guy mentioned above) who hit .429 in the 1876 season. He had 138 hits in 322 at bats. The White Stockings played 66 games that season and Barnes played in all 66.

Recently, Chipper Jones was close for part of the season, but didn't end up too close. Ted Williams is the only player to hit 400.
