Pole vault has been contested at the Modern Olympics since the first Modern Games in 1896 in Athens. The first Olympic champion in pole vault was Welles Hoyt of the United States with a vault of 3.30 meters (10 feet, 10 inches). Compare that with 2008 Olympic champion Steve Hooker of Australia who won with a vault of 5.96 meters (19 feet, 6 1/2 inches).
Pole jumping competitions were known to the ancient Greeks, as well as the Cretans and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women.
