No, NFL rules state that a division winner has an automatic place in the playoffs.
The top teams in each of the eight divisions will automatically make the playoffs. Then there are two wildcard teams that make the playoffs from each conference (NFC & AFC). These two wildcard teams in each conference make the playoffs based off of who has the best record other than the four that have already won their division. If two teams have the same record, then they look at the head to head games, and then their point differential. Recap: 8 teams who win their conferences, 4 in each conference (NFC, AFC), automatically make it (AFC West, AFC East, AFC North, AFC South, NFC West, NFC East, NFC North, NFC South) 4 teams, 2 in each conference (NFC, AFC), who have the best records other than the teams in the conference who have already won their division.

In the Super Bowl Era, only ONE team has started 1-5 and made the playoffs; in fact, they started 1-6. The 1970 Cincinnati Bengals won their Division and went on to the AFC Playoffs. They were shutout in that Playoff game by the BALTIMORE Colts, 17-0.

Currently there aren't any teams in the NFL Playoffs, although if you are talking about the Superbowl, the last two teams were the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens eventually won.

Yes. Six teams from each conference make the playoffs, the four division winners and the two teams with the best won/loss record that did not win their division. If a division winner's record is less than .500 they still make the playoffs. If the record of one of the two teams with the best record that did not win their division is less than .500, they still make the playoffs. Only three teams with losing records have ever made the NFL playoffs: The Browns and Lions both entered the 1982 playoffs with 4-5 records. (The season was shortened by a players' strike.) In 2010 the Seattle Seahawks won the NFC West with a 7-9 record, becoming the first NFL team to make the playoffs with a losing record in a full season.
