World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has actually went by several names over the years. WWE was origionally called the Capitol Wrestling Corporiation and was owned by Vince McMahon Sr. and Toots Mondt. At this point the CWC was part of the National Wrestling Alliance. On January 24, 1963, NWA Heavyweight Champion Buddy Rogers lost a 2 out of 3 falls match to challenger Lou Thesz. Because Thesz won the last fall by disqualification, promoters in the northeast refused to acknowledge the title change. Those promoters, lead by Vince Sr., officially broke off from the National Wrestling Alliance and formed the World-Wide Wrestling Federation. Vince Sr. would eventually become full owner of the WWWF. In 1982, the WWWF was bought/inherited by Vincent Kennedy McMahon Jr. and renamed the World Wrestling Federation. On May 5th, 2002, after losing a legal battle with the World Wildlife Fund over the use of the initials WWF, the World Wrestling Federation was officially renamed World Wrestling Entertainment.
it started with Vince McMahon's father who created awa: American wrestling association. which he gave it to his son vince for a measly amount of money.
he ended up making it the prize of all wrestling organization by making the wwf:world wrestling federation in which he bought over wcw: world championship wrestling and ecw:extreme championship wrestling to create a new stable and company called the wwe.
Because the World Wildlife Fund sued them as they were the WWF too. A spokesperson once said that they were doing an event and the security asked them when they arrived who they were and what they were doing. The representative said "we are from the WWF" to which security responded "oh, where are the wrestlers?". This actually pissed them off enough to sue poor Mr. McMahon over the initials. The case was settled out of court and they began using WWE instead of WWF, to which WWE ran a tv marketing slogan "WWE, get the "F" out". Also, WWE cannot use the WWF scratch logo but the old school logos are fine. Also when referring to this period, the can't say WWF, they have to say World Wrestling Federation, WWE, and on old footage they have to edit out f, so all you hear them say is ww. This has to be one of the dumbest things ever. To sue a company over 3 letters that the company you are suing, was using first by the way, because you don't like being mistakenly identified as them.
