Martial arts is a category of activity, deriving from martial (something military in its nature) and art (the exploration of ideas through a discipline). Many of them include Karate (born of India, then adopted and expanded in China), Kug Fu, Judo (a wresltling art of Japan and Korea, Jiu Jitsu (a cousin to Judo, later exported to Brazil, where the Gracie family adopted and re-invented it) Aiki-jiujitsu, which spawned Aikido (an art designed to enable peasants to combat samurai, using movements derived from swordsmanship), Tae Kwan Do, (a Korean art based largely on kicking), Capoiera (a Brazilian, slave-invented art disguised as dance) Muay Thai (literally, "Thai Boxing"), Krabi Krabong (the double-sword father of Muay Thai) and Kali (an art that uses two short batons in addition to hand-to-hand), Win Chun and the slow and meditative Tai Chi. This list is in no way comprehensive.

Neither MMA nor Krav Maga are martial arts. Krav Maga is an Israeli fighting system. MMA is a sport that originally invited practitoners of all disciplines, but has evolved into one that has a very distinct and cohesive set of practices broken down into two categories as "striking and grappling."
