Women played no part in the Ancient Games as they were not allowed to even watch the games, let alone take part. The reason behind this is due to the fact that Olympia was dedicated to Zeus and was therefore a sacred area for men. The chariot races (introduced in later games) were held outside the sacred precinct, were open to women spectators. However some accounts do remark that the priestess of Demeter was required to attend and that maidens were also permitted to watch.

I think Ancient Greece had a Patriarchal society. Women were though as lower in society than men, stayed at home, and very rarely received an education. However, keep in mind standards varied by "City-state".

the Romans did not hold the Olympics. the Olympics is a greek tradition that has carried into what it is today. the Romans held bloodsports in their famous colliseum, while the Greeks held the olympiads in Athens. in both cultures, woman could not compete. they were there solely for the pleasures of men. and it was a much greater time.
