A supercharger or any other performance modification will increase the stress on the engine components of any engine. It isn't a good idea to make such a drastic change to an engine and leave all the rest of the components unchanged. The first (or fifth or sixtieth) time you floor it from a light, you may snap a rod or break a piston. Think this through and it will make sense.
If you don't care about how long you car's engine will last, bolt on a supercharger and go for it. But consider that you might spend some money (approximately the same money) getting the heads redone, snagging a new cam, and then adding on some electronic ignition and some appropriate carburetion for increased performance. They won't do what the blower will do, but you'll run a lot lower risk of scattering internal engine parts down the street when you come off the line as you would with something like, say, a GMC 6-71 on top of the intake.
