Halteres were made of metal or stone, and in Ancient Greece, athletes used them for weight lifting. They also used them when performing the long-jump. The athletes would swing them back and forth to build momentum and then let go of them at the moment they were ready to jump.

They were used in order to get extra distance. Tha added weight would be propelled forward by the atheletes them dropped when they felt the halteres had reached maximum output. More information can be found here:
