Volleyball began with a man named William G. Morgan. He was friends with the man who invented Basketball. Basically, he wanted to create a sport because his friend did. Both volleyball and basketball were created for the YMCA, which leads to the fact the volleyball was originally created for men/boys. Girls have taken on the sport, but men still play nationwide.
It was invented in 1895 by a YMCA teacher, William G Morgan, in Massachusetts, USA.
With the same intention as basketball, also invented there a little earlier, he aspired a spectacular, physically demanding, non-violent team sport suited for the indoor sport season, however somewhat less vigorous than basketball and suitable for older people also. He was also inspired by handball, Baseball and tennis.
Initially it was called Mintonette, but renamed to Volley ball in 1896, later Volleyball. It has spawned many varieties, like Beach Volleyball and Footvolley especially for outdoor playing. Kidsvolley and Volley 2000, are adapted to young players, allowing a ground bounce. Sitting volleyball is a variant adapted to disabled persons.
The modern Volleyball rules have evolved around the world, especially in 1900-1930, with the number of players, spiking and scoring, to keep the balance in playing techniques, not favouring extreme specialization but maintaining spectator interest with long balls, yet avoiding tie-break issues. The rules are aimed to be egalitarian, as every player must play in every position through the rotation, including serve, and back line players may not attack in front, at the net. "Backspike" is allowed, though. Volleyball is played in the Olympics since 1964, and rules have been revised occasionally at those times. A notable change is the addition of a "libero" in 1998, a versatile player that may be put in place of an exchanged back-row player at will.
The game is considered by many to be quiite easy to begin with, for fun, but hard enough to master, giving reasonable challenge at all times. This may contribute to the fact that it is one of world's most practised sports, second only to football (Am. soccer) in number of practisers, and first in number of countries where it is practised.
