The Superbowl organizers wanted to play it safe with a veteran like Tom Petty; especially after the scandal with Janet Jackson !

ALSO: they had asked The Eagles to perform at the suprbowl...they said no cuz they wanted to focus on the country fans (watever) so tehy asked tom and tom was honored to do it
