The Yankees had selected Enos Slaughter off waivers from the Kansas City Athletics and needed to release someone to make room for him on the active roster.

Phil's offensive and defensive production had been going downhill and he was 38 years old. He lost the starting shortstop job in 1955 and had played in only 31 games in the 1956 season when he was released on August 25.

To fill the vacancy at shortstop the Yankees had Gil McDougal play that position on a full time basis.
