Manny Ramirez was hit with a 100 game suspension by MLB in April, 2011 for violating the League's drug policy when he tested positive for a performance enhancing substance during spring training. Since this was his second violation (his first was in 2009 and he was given a 50 game suspension) the penalty was 100 games.
Rather than serve the suspension, he immediately announced his retirement from the game. Doing this kept MLB from giving details about the incident, instead, MLB released a statement saying there was an issue with Ramirez' drug test and he had chosen to retire.

Ramirez chose to voluntarily retire in 2011 instead of serving the suspension while he was with the Tampa Bay Rays however in September of 2011 he wanted to rejoin Major League Baseball and an agreement was made to serve a reduced 50 game suspension and then he signed a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics however once he was eligible to play Oakland elected to not call for his services and in June of 2012 they had released him
