Why mountain biking has only become a popular sport in the last 20-30 years?

Because there has been more places for mountain bikers to go and there is alot of mountain bikes that have been adapted over the last 20 - 30 years to suit more rockier ground.

Partly fashion, partly greater investment and easier access to ride areas.

Wasn't that long ago where you had to set out on your own, on basically unmarked trails, with very Little support.

Nowadays many ski resorts have built trails, run their lifts etc which makes riding a lot easier for those less dedicated.

Mountain bikes have been around twenty years or more where I live in New England. They probably give you a better work out depending on the trail.
