Carbohydrates enter the blood stream as glucose, which serves as a high-energy source of fuel so that your body can make it through the rigorous run. Carbohydrates are an essential part of the diets of distance runners because the glucose is absorbed in the liver and synthesized into glycogen (strands of glucose), which are used by runners during marathons as the primary energy source. The carbohydrate drinks help to maintain your energy level.
Sugar is easily digested carbohydrate. A runner burns roughly 100 calories per mile and a marathon is a little over 26 miles. The body can't store enough energy as carbohydrate to complete the full distance, so replenishment along the course is necessary to prevent (or at least delay) the body from switching to burning fat for energy which is less efficient.
The body typically stores about 2000 calories of carbohydrate. When this is used up it makes continuing to run more difficult. This is referred to by marathoners as "hitting the wall", as it feels like you've hit a brick wall and it's difficult to continue. Training, pre-race diet, and carbohydrate replenishment during the run help runners avoid "the wall".

Glucose is what gives us energy.
So when we have too much Glucose our liver will store it and convert it into Glycogen. When we exercise this Glycogen us converted back.
but we can work this off during exercise do if you are running you need an extra supply of Glucose to provide you and your muscles with energy.
If that helps atall? :) xx
A marathon is a long race. As you run, you lose water from perspiration as well as in your breath. If you did not drink, you would become dehydrated and collapse.
