In 1903 "L'Auto", the French sports newspaper now called "L'Equipe", staged the race to help promote their newspaper which was struggling to compete with France's first, and by far strongest, sports paper "Le Velo". Needless to say, the Tour was a success and Le Velo was out of circulation one year later.
