Arguably the pitcher is the most important defensive player because if, in a perfect world, they do not let anyone even hit the ball, they are doing all of the defensive work. The other players, besides the catcher, wouldn't even have to be there. Of course this is just theoretical and even in a perfect game, the pitcher heavily relies on the entire team behind (or in front, in terms of the catcher) him/her.

First off, all of the positions on the field are very important. Obviously, you need a pitcher, and a catcher really helps speed the game up too. It's not very common for a player to get an infield single, and the reason is, that there are 5 other players able to field the ball, and throw the runner out before he gets to first base. Now, without a first basemen there, getting on base would be much much easier.

in softball, a first baseman has to:

-cover their base when a ball is hit to the infield and prepare for the throw

-charge when the batter squares to bunt

-be able to catch a ball that is coming at them really fast either from the third baseman, shortstop, or second baseman

-be able to get to their base really quickly in case you are getting ready to catch a throw from the catcher if they are trying to pick off the person at first base

-be able to catch wild throws anywhere within 5 square feet of the base

this is what a first baseman has to do in order to be a good softball player. :D

Well, a first baseman plays on the right side of the infield, on groundballs the 2nd baseman shortstop and thirdbaseman all throw the ball across the infield and if the first baseman catches the ball before the hitter touches first it is an out. On a basehit to the outfield if there is a play at home the first baseman will act as a cutoff man to homeplate to the center and right fielders.

Here are a few great first basemens currently playing- Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Mark Teixeria.

How important is each position on a baseball field?

Each position is very important on the field. The short stop is most important because most balls are hit toward them so that position should contain the most intelligent and best player. All the players should be able to catch, throw, and all the other obvious ways just in case the ball is hit to them. There is any chance the ball will go everywhere so make sure you have good players in all positions at all times.

Is pitching more important than batting?

Baseball is an odd sport in that the defensive team has the only opportunity to score points. The pitcher has the single most important offensive position in the game. If the pitcher does not succeed in his goal of getting the ball past the batter, then the other members of the offense must "take up the slack." However, the defensive batter has the only position that can score. If you are in the dugout, then the most important player to you is the batter. If you are in the field, then the most important player is the pitcher. If you have a bat in your hand, then you better be sure the most important player is you.

Can you still be a quarterback when you are 5'11 - 6'0?

Absolutely. The quarterback position is the most demanding on the field from a mental aspect. Leadership and confidence are two of the most important aspects of the position. Also important is the ability to read defenses and knowing when not to throw the ball to a particular receiver. Physically, arm strength and accuracy of throwing is very important. Certainly, it helps to be taller but many things go into the making of a good quarterback besides height.
