Even if a person is exercising a lot they shouldn't just eat everything unhealthy. Eating bad food no matter how much you exercise isn't healthy. And people should eat healthy. I'm assuming you're asking this as "if i run/play a sport does it matter what i eat since I'm going to burn all of the calories off anyways" kind of question.

Nutrition is essential for supporting an athlete's general health and their training needs. Having a suitable diet provides a person with enough energy and nutrients to meet the demands of training and exercise. In addition to helping a person perform optimally, it facilitates recovery.

This is a very general question.

If you are a male:

It is best to have a well-balanced diet. 6-7 smaller meals a day will keep your body's engine or metabolic rate up high throughout the day. Be sure to include 25g of protein per meal. High amounts of 300-500g carbohydrates are a plus for the athlete who focuses on both cardio and weight lifting methods. Beware of high sodium foods! Caloric intake will vary depending on your level of activity 2200-3500/day, Olympic training (7500-12000 cal).

Do not focus too much on low fat foods as these have other harmful additives. Focus on food that is deemed lean or gives you a fat to meat percentage/ratio.

A powerful water soluble multivitamin is a must. Water soluble is best because it becomes active in your system much faster than ingesting a pill and waiting 20 mins to 1 hour for it is start kicking in.

After workouts some people may not wish to eat; however this is the best time. Consider a protein shake or a the powerful vegan all vitamin high protein, low sugar, no sodium, all organic, VEGA berry/vanilla/Dark Chocolate mix (just add water and blend or shake) this absorbs quickly into the system and provides all the nutrients necessary in one day via one serving.

Remember people who workout use more resources than those who do not. It is necessary to intake more nutrients to keep your fatigue level low and energy level high. For women: The above information is applicable but in smaller quantities due to the differences in body type. Protein intake 15g per meal, carbohydrates same, multivitamins along with high omega-3, 6, 9 are important. Be careful to watch your iron intake. Some women do not do well with moderate to high ingestion of iron especially if expecting.
