In 1992, Jeff Gordon signed a contract with Rick Hendrick, and becomes a fulltime driver for Hendrick Motorsports. With him and his crew dressed in their bright rainbow colored uniforms, along with his new multi-colored #24 Chevrolet, they are quickly nicknamed the "Rainbow Warriors" because of their brightly-colored uniforms.

Other Unrelated Notes:

There is a song by CocoRosie called Rainbow Warriors, which is probably where they adopted the name.

The Rainbow Warrior was a Greenpeace ship which was the target of the only piece of terrorism to ever hit New Zealand, perpetrated by the French. They snuck into New Zealand and bombed the Warrior as it was being used in protests about French nuclear testing in the South Pacific. A death was even involved.

The "Rainbow Warriors" used to be the name of the University of Hawaii football team before they dropped the "Rainbow".

Rainbow is a grocery chain found in the Minneapolis area.
