One reason only- Money. The Olympics benefit a VERY small group of people, from the financial world that supplies the money, to the juiced-in contractors that build the venues.

The "people" are left with a staggering bill to pay, a huge mess to clean up, and a large number of useless buildings when it is all over.

Several years ago Salt Lake City hosted the Olympics, and it there that the public, at least those that paid attention, learned how the olympics REALLY work; bribery, payoffs, scams, etc...

By far, the greatest reason is for the money it generates for business and subsequently for the government.

A long way second is the prestige.

The problem is the ordinary citizen gets nothing but a huge bill, severe congestion, absurdly raised prices for things like food and other staples, and decades of paying back the money borrowed....The Olympics benefit a VERY small group of people, and COST a great many people alot of money.

Hosting is a huge financial commitment, in terms of infrastructure construction (buildings, roads, etc), services (police, food, hotels). Even for huge countries with a stable economy it is difficult. For other nations it is a gamble.

Sponsoring is basically just providing financial funding, and in return the company's name is displayed as a sponsor.

When people see this, they may be inclined to seek the services of this company. That is the hope, anyways.

In the case of the Olympics, companies want to be sponsors because, what with being such a large event, a lot of people will see that name.

It's a type of advertising, essentially.

Yes it is. Cities normally host Olympics and Luxembourg is a country. While it is small it is still more than big enough to host the Olympics. Like any city that has hosted the Olympics, all it would need would be to build some more facilities.
