The reason the Yankees do not have their names on their shirts is because when the club first started the number on the shirt reflected where they stood in the lineup. Obviously this changes.

Even though today the same does not hold true, the tradition does.

Because the Yankees philosophy is that you play for the team not yourself. So they leave the names off of the jersey to promote the team instead of the player.

Because they are a traditional team and like the Giants and Boston they do the same. Also, they think that true fans know who the players are.

How many MLB teams do not have cities on their jerseys?

The New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and San Francisco Giants do not display their players' names on their home uniforms. While the Red Sox and Giants have their players' names on their away jerseys, the Yankees do not display them on their road jerseys.

Why do some baseball teams have names on their jerseys while other teams do not?

It tends to be a matter of home team etiquette overcoming blatant commercial advertising of a player's name. Teams like the Red Sox and Dodgers and Yankees (the Red Sox are the only one I can name for sure) don't put the names of the players on the home jerseys, probably because the hometown faithful are expected to know who they are. On the road jerseys, however, their names are listed, as is the case with any teams that have blank home jerseys that I know of. **** Correction. The Yankees do not have their names on their home jerseys OR their away jerseys.

Which current MLB teams other than the Yankees do not wear their names on their uniforms either home or away?

How many uniform combinations do the San Francisco Giants have and when do they wear them?

The San Francisco Giants have two caps with the orange SF logo: a solid black version and a two-toned version with an orange bill that is worn on Sundays. The Giants' traditional home uniform is cream colored and does not have the players' names on the backs of jerseys. This is worn for all Giants home games, except those played on "Orange Fridays." For every Friday Giants home game, the team wears orange jerseys and black caps. Occasionally, the Giants will pay tribute to their Latino fans by wearing home jerseys with "Gigantes" on the front instead of "Giants." In 2015, San Francisco also began wearing a black jersey at some home games. They wore the black tops during the entire 2016 spring training schedule. For road games, the Giants usually wear gray jerseys with "San Francisco" on the front. Unlike the team's home jerseys, the players' names are on the backs. In 2012, the team revived the gray road jerseys with the SF logo that was popular during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Giants wore this uniform and the two-toned cap at Sunday road games. The Giants wore nine different uniform styles during the 2015 season.

How many jerseys are issued to MLB players per season?

Four or five home jerseys are issued each year to each player, as well as four or five away jerseys. That comes out to 20 or so uses of each jersey, less if any are not repairable or do not come clean. Each uniform has a year and number. For a home game to open the season, your jersey would have a "1" tag and a year tag, e.g. "2008."
