That's not necessarily true. A school can select any weekend to be their homecoming weekend. Traditionally it would take place during a weekend when the school has a home football game, but this could be any game during the season.
The purpose of "homecoming" is to welcome alumni back to the school. The football game is just one part of the tradition. Usually former athletes are recognized during halftime of the game.
