∙ 12y agoBecause when the term was coined, The US WAS the world of Baseball. ...and it's not just American teams (unless you're using the term "American" to refer to anyone from North America). Canada has the blue jays, and used to also have the Expos until they moved to Washington and became the Nationals in 2005.
However, I believe that "World Series" is only used out of habit, and the "official" name of the championship series is actually now "The Fall Classic".

∙ 12y agoAmerican Professional Baseball is made up into 2 divisions or leagues. After a season of play and a couple of weeks of playoffs the 2 leagues, the American and National send their champions to the World Series. Although called the World Series there are only American teams participating. The recent World baseball classic showed American baseball is not the only dominate team around.

The championship of baseball is called the World Series. Since 1903, the winners of the National League and American League play each other in the championship to determine who is the best team in the league.
Baseball's first modern World Series was in 1903. The American League's Boston Red Sox upset the New York Giants 5 games to 3, in a best of 9 series. The first baseball series called the World Series took place in 1882, with the American Association champion playing the National League champion. But those were considered exhibition games, and are not generally recognized as part of the World Series history.

Here is the entire baseball session. First are what are called exhibition games, or the preseason games. Then the season starts. In the middle of the season is the All-Star Game and the Home Run Derby. Then the second half of the season is played. Now comes the post season: The American/National League Division Series The American/National League Championship Series The World Series

The " World Series" itself is not a sport. It is the championship 7 game series played between two major league baseball teams each year in october. The winner of the American League and the winner of the National League play in a "best-of-seven" series hence the name "World Series"
