Your eyes burn in any pool for the same reason, pH levels out of range, or the cloramines are to high. Check the pH 1st, should be 7.4 to 7.6, low-add soda ash, high add muriatic acid. Cloramines, total chlorine minus free chlorine, should not be above .5 ppm, if so shock pool.

check out the chlorine in the water or see if there is some other imbalance, Take a sample of water to your pool shop and they can also be of assistance by testing the water.

A: The imbalance is not so much in the chlorine content as it is in the balance of the pH and Total alkalinity. Adjust the latter 2 and you eye burning will diminish greatly.

Your PH isn't the only thing to worry about, I recently did a few tests because we were having the same problem. There is a chemical used to keep algae off the tile around the edge of the pool. this stuff contains a chemical that not only causes skin and eye irritation but has been found to cause cancer in labratory animals! you can check out my website for the whole writeup on this topic including detailed lab procedures to prove that this chemical is in the pool www.howtoalmanac.com/Kevin/informatives/pool.htm

usaully your eyes burn while swimming because the pH level of the water is out of balance and when this happens you actually start damaging the eye tissues is not life threatening because your eyes immediately start to heal themselves I recommend that everyone should carry a small bottle of pool test strips with them they are inexpensive and you can instantly test pool water before jumping in because lets face it the sanitizer level of the water needs to be high enough to protect you and your family from disease like ecoli . public pools are never as clean as you think

Chlorine is a harsh chemical, the same chemical that is used in bleach, and it is used to kill germs in Swimming Pools. It has a tendency to irritate peoples eyes, especially right after new chlorine is added.
