You can get cramp in any form of exercise, a build up of Lactic Acid due to anaerobic exercise (muscle uses energy burnt from your own body) cause the muscles to seize and 'Cramp'.

Cramp is removed when your body has returned to a normal balance of Ph within the muscle, by paying off Oxygen Debt (Oxygen it didn't use because the body burnt glucose for energy).

Arguably you can get cramp easily whilst swimming because of the muscle actions needed to correct body position whilst keeping buoyancy. But Myths are known for this statement.

swimming works many muscles, but especially shoulder muscles. An intense workout can cause these muscles to be sore, especially if you are not use to such kinds of activity

You get chest pains while your swimming because of the pressure from the water on your body. Your body isn't used to the pressure so you get pains in your chest.

Maybe because of the energy you have to exert to swim and because of the water temperature
