Paratroopers roll to dissipate the kinetic energy associated with the fall. As the ground is, for all intents and purposes, an immovable object, landing directly on your feet would bring you to an immediate stop, and as the body has no way to naturally counteract the energy which has nowhere to go, severe injury would be likely.
the reason that parachutists bend their legs and roll is not because it looks cool, it is so that when they land they act like a human shock absorber so the shock is absorbed in their legs so that when they land they don't shatter their leg bones. looking like a badass is just a side effect. :) you can try it if you want do a small jump and land with your legs straight and it jolts you far more than if you bend your legs but don't do it too much as it is bad for your legs

When you use a trampoline, you keep your legs mostly straight, and the energy of your landing is absorbed by the trampoline. When you jump on the ground, you bend your legs and they absorb the energy of your landing. If you jump down after using the trampoline, you may forget to bend your legs, and do yourself serious harm
A child bends their legs when jumping from a height to absorb the impact of the landing. This bending of the legs helps to reduce the force exerted on the body upon landing, which can help prevent injury to the joints and bones.
You bend your knees on landing in order to prevent from breaking a bone. Your feet have arches that act as a shock absorber. But falling from great heights require something to slow down your body. As you land, you bend your knees and allow the muscles to slow down your speed. If not, your bone would take all the force and break. I hope that is your answer.
giraffes cannot bend there legs-and snakes :)
Bending the legs upon landing allows the parachutist to absorb the impact gradually, reducing the risk of injury. This helps distribute the force of the landing throughout the body more effectively. Straight legs could result in a more abrupt stop upon impact, increasing the chances of injury to the spine, legs, or hips.
