There are six basic figure skating jumps: three edge jumps (Axel, loop and salchow), and three toe jumps (Lutz, flip and toe loop). All of the jumps take off backwards except for the Axel, which goes off of a forward outside edge.

Most jumps take off backwards because (a) the backward edges are more secure and you can get better speed and better push and (b) jumps are landed backwards, so when you do an Axel, you are actually doing an extra 1/2 rotation. For example, a triple Axel is really 3.5 rotations in the air, which makes it more difficult.

How do figure skaters keep moving across the ice at high speeds for long times while seldom pumping their skates?

well really, figure skaters are constantly pumping their legs when they skate. They do crossovers, which are pulls that you do when you skate backwards and forwards, and it gives you a lot of speed! :)

How tall was Peggy Schuyler?

she about 6.2 feet tall thank you Barely 5' 2"; said she was 5'4" to face easier competition in the run ups. There are no tall female figure skaters of note. The center of gravity must be low for the jumps.......tall skaters can do speed skating, and ice dancing. They remain an insult to the ice trying to figure skate.

What is the Different between a ice hockey and figure skate?

On a figure skate, there is a small pick at the end called a toe-pick which figure skaters use to dig into the ice in order to throw themselves into the air. As well as this, they also have a rounded part of the blade next to the toe-pick called the rocker this helps them turn backwards, and spin easier. However, the hockey skate does not have a toe-pick and only has a small rocker because in a hockey game, toe-picks would be extremely dangerous if someone got kicked in the face with the toe-pick, and they don't spin, so they don't need the bigger rocker.
