Singh (2010) identifies that "Minonette" was the name given to the game by its creator, William J Morgan (Physical Director of the American Young Men's Christian Association - YMCA) in 1895 in Massachusetts. As the game spread around Massachusetts and other New England cities through the YMCA Dr T A Holstead suggested that its name was changed to Volleyball as the basic idea of the game was to volley the ball back and forth over the net (Nicholls, 1978).
