In one word, greed. Both sides primarily squabbled over how to divide the revenues generated by the league games. The issues of free agency and a salary cap also first emerged. Ultimately the owners won because they were better prepared, i.e. they had replacement players ready on standby, than the union that didnt even have a strike fund set up, resulting in the players union being temporarily disbanded. Many NFL owners feel that the 1987 strike was when they took back the league and brought run away salaries under control.
