Chaps are mainly used to add extra protection to the inner thigh and calf muscle in the legs to both prevent chaffing and sores from the saddle. Chaps also add protection to the shins and thighs from woody or spiny vegetation that would tear the jeans when horse and rider move through thick brush or cacti when chasing down livestock.
