Lenin wanted to satisfy the people of Russia who were against the war so he promised them them that the Bolsheviks would do so if they were in power. Also, Russia was taking great losses in the war and thousands of soldiers were deserting and refusing to fight.
When Lenin did take over though he changed his tune and kept the war going while trying to arrange an acceptable peace with Germany. When Germany would not accept surrender on favorable terms he proposed continuing at least a defensive war. Eventually Germany resumed hostilities in full against Russia and only then did Lenin settle the war and then his main motivation was the preservation of his own position in power, because Germany began marching toward his capital with the aim to remove him and replace him with a puppet government.
