Why did FIFA choose South Africa to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup?

The host selection for the 2010 FIFA World Cup was determined with a voting process by the FIFA Executive Committee. For the selection, 5 African nations placed a bid for the right to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup: Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, and a joint bid of Libya and Tunisia.

Tunisia conceded from the bidding process after the Executive Committee decided not to allow any more co-hosted tournaments after the 2002 FIFA World Cup (hosted by Japan and South Korea). Tunisia believed that this would give Libya a chance to host the tournament. However, the Executive Committee declared that Libya no longer met the List of Requirements needed to host the World Cup with Tunisia's withdrawal. As a result, Libya's bid was no longer considered.

The winning bid was announced by FIFA president Sepp Blatter at a media conference on 15 May 2004 in Zürich; in the first round of voting South Africa received 14 votes, Morocco received 10 votes and Egypt no votes. South Africa, which had narrowly failed to win the right to host the 2006 event, was thus awarded the right to host the tournament.

South Africa became the host for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The World Cup was won by Spain, with the runner-up being the Netherlands. Third place was awarded to Germany.
