Michigan decided that it could not abide by a number of rules changes primarily affecting football that were presented and discussed at a meeting of Western Conference (as the Big Ten was then known)administrators in Chicago in 1908. Among the proposals was to limit the number of games played, restrictions on player eligibility and coaching eligibility that was seen as an attempt to disqualify legendary Michigan coach Fielding Yost.
