Babe Ruth, at age 40, was released by the New York Yankees following the 1934 season and signed by the Boston Braves to start the 1935 season. In his first game with the Braves, he hit a home run, but as the season progressed, he realized his career was over. In June, after hitting seven home runs for the Braves that year, he removed himself from the lineup and ended his playing career. At that time, his skills had diminished to the point he could no longer play in the field, nor run the bases. Baseball rules were altered so that a courtesy runner was allowed for Ruth when he got on base, but still allowed him to remain in the lineup, a rule established for Ruth only, just to keep the former star in the lineup as he was still a draw for the Braves, who were struggling in the field and at the box office. The Braves finished last in the National League that season with a record of just 38 wins against 115 losses.
