Miami Heat are called the heat because if you think about it, is it cold in miami? If it was cold in miami it would be called the miami frost or miami shiver. In other words it is hot in miami and they think they are hot in terms of style.

Because the city of Miami was mostly built with drug money thru the massive cocaine trade that happened when dealers would import it from Cuba and surrounding areas.So when they say 'heat' they mean heat from police.

That's not true. It's because of the heat. The team's general partner, Zev Bufman said that name was chosen in a poll coz when you think of Miami you think of the heat. It's bloody warm in Miami. Nothing to do with drug money.

The franchise name was decided by a survey after the franchise was awarded in 1987, with the Heat (referring to Miami's temperature) narrowly beating the iconic name Vice.
