In 1933 , the Detroit Falcons were bought by James Norris. Norris had been a member of the Montreal AAA club way back in the early years of the 20th century. They were also known as the Winged Wheelers and sported a winged wheel on their sweaters. Norris adopted the winged wheel emblem, the red colours and changed the name of the team to the Red Wings.

The Red Wings don't have a mascot in the normal sense of the things like you would see at games in Nashville, Philadelphia, Chicago or most other hockey teams. The team's "mascot" is Al the Octopus, which fittingly is, an octopus. He is lowered at gameslike many teams around the league and other sports do for the player entrances. Extra information is located at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_the_Octopus

In 1932 the team (then known as the Falcons) was purchased by James Norris. Norris had once played for a team in Montreal known as the Winged Wheelers and based on that, decided to name his new team the Red Wings with a winged wheel as the logo.

In 1933 the Detroit Falcons were purchased by Detroit businessman James Norris.

In the early years of the century Mr. Norris was a member of the Montreal AAA hockey club which sported a winged wheel on their sweaters and were also known as the Winged Wheelers.

Mr Norris adopted the winged wheel as his team's logo, and also the colors, and named his new team the Red Wings.

I think your question is a bit unclear, but their logo is a wheel with a wing. The wheel shows the cities street design, and was designed in 1932, when James Norris bought the NHL's Detroit Falcons. Norris had formerly played for the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association's hockey team (four time Stanley Cup champions) whose nickname was the "Winged Wheelers" after their logo, a wheel with two wings. Norris adapted the logo into the now familiar red winged wheel and changed the team's name to Red Wings.

the symbol on the jerseys is a wheel with a wing. it's a wheel because Detroit is the MOTOR city, cars, yeah... and the color of the wing is obviously red. therefor, RED WINGS.

by the way. we're taking home the cup tonight :)
