The last Phillies player to wear the #42 was P Toby Borland between 1994-1996. The number was retired by all MLB teams in honor of Jackie Robinson at the start of the 1997 season.

MLB honored Jackie Robinson on April 15, the day of Robinson's first ever MLB game, by having all players on all teams playing wear the #42. The Phillies/Nationals game was rained out that day. The honor to Jackie Robinson was moved to the next series the Phillies played the Nationals.
