George Owen wore the first NHL helmet int he season of 1928-1929.
I think the first helmet used in hockey was by a goalie named Jacques Plante. He had to use a mask/helmet for the first time in 1959 because of a broken nose, so then it started becoming more popular in the early 1960's for goalies, before any skater wore a a helmet.
Swedish Ice Hockey champion, Sven Tumba invented the first hockey helmet, called the SPAPS-helmet

There are many advantages to having a helmet on when playing hockey. Often in hockey people will "check" other people by slamming them into a wall and a helmet protects players from injuries.
Jacques Plantes
NO hockey helmets are much better. Ski helmets are not that good but do the job. Hockey helmet will protect you much more in short range falls and long range falls the any ski helmet.
you can get them at most hockey stores now.
