Babe Ruth was the first New York Yankee to wear the number 3. Babe batted third for the New York Yankees, and when they first started to use numbers they handed them out as you batted in the line up. Other Yankees that wore the number 3 included George Selkirk (1935-1942), Bud Metheny (1943-1946), Roy Weatherly (1946), Ed Bockman (1946), Allie Clark(1947), and Cliff Mapes (1948). Babe Ruth's number 3 was retired by the Yankees in 1948.
