Marion Jones of the United States won the gold but subsequently had it stripped when she admitted to using performance enhancing substances. To this date the International Olympic Committee has not re-awarded a gold medal for the event. What they did was award a silver to Tayna Lawrence of Jamaica, who originally finished third, and a bronze medal to Merlene Ottey of Jamaica who originally finished fourth. Ekaterini Thanou of Greece kept her silver medal for finishing second.
