Rutgers of New Jersey
The private college in New Jersey now known as Rutgers College has its name due to a million dollar plus contribution by the wealthy Henry Rutgers in 1805. It should be noted that Rutgers College still exists within Rutgers University.
The first college football game was played on November 6, 1869 and was between Rutgers University and the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University, at College Field on the Rutgers campus. The game was played under the rules of the English Football Association and more resembled soccer than it did American football. Players were allowed to advance the ball solely by kicking or batting it; they were not allowed to carry the ball. Rutgers won 6-4.
Many American college football fans know that the first American inter-collegiate football game was played at New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1866. The a team from Princeton challenged Rutgers and lost in a one sided affair. With that said, football fans also know that before this so-called birth of American football was between Rutgers and Princeton, earlier skirmishes on an intramural basis began at Yale University in 1840. Thereafter, these types of intramural games were part of American college sports.
